April 11- Important Feedback & Updates

We are IMPRESSIVE! Need Proof? Then Read on about what last week’s observers wrote and told me about their visit to PA.
  • -          I was approached a number of times in the hallways by students who politely asked me if I needed help. NICE!!
  • -          Students seemed very kind and respectful to each other. Great climate!
  • -          Wonderful focus on an essential question…excellent targeting of explicit skill.
  • -          Students very attentive…all busily notating the reading .
  • -          The school had a sense of calm about it. I’ve been to schools where, the instant you pass through the doors, you feel tense and ill at ease. As I walked around the halls at PA, though, the space felt…What’s the opposite of strained?.
  • -          I was struck by how much trust the school gives its students.
  • -          What I DID see was that 99% of the students on devices were on task, using them for what they supposed to be used for.
  • Thank you so much for hosting the Compass teachers who visited your school last week. They returned with great energy and enthusiasm generated by their day at Peoples.

And from the LSSU admin team:
o   Universally students were participating and doing what was being asked of them
o   Teacher and student interactions were respectful and intentional
-  The climate was upbeat, positive with good vibes abounding - students often said "hello" or offered help in the hallways and classrooms.
o   No behavior issues, no distracting conversations or misuse of technology, etc
o   There was vibrant and intellectual discussion
o   Technology integration was seamless and apparent
o   Teachers regularly modeled learning
o   Extensive evidence of personalization, differentiation, and authenticity
o   Impressively inclusive
o   Lots of Laughter

Still not convinced that we are awesome? Read on....

It was exciting to see the many ways students exhibited their art and performance skills last week. It was also unfortunate that the 1 Act was cancelled, partly because the HS chorus was going to open the show with a song. But, hopefully many of you were able to attend the concerts and 1 Act evening show last week. Thanks to Averill, Alexis, Dan, and Dave for guiding our students in the arts. (And Peter G for all the set up support!)

Budget Update:EMUU - Budget Update
The EMUU board has been hard at work on budget development. We have a preliminary budget approved, and hope to finalize it Tuesday, 4/12, 6:30 p.m., MES library. Public comment/input welcome! Please come and share your thoughts. The budget we are prepared to recommend maintains a high level of programming for students, and is respectful of taxpayers in both communities.

Mark your calendars:  EMUU annual meeting 5/23, 6:00 p.m., Elmore Town Hall.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT PBL
    • We are excited to announce LSSU’s transition to Schoology as our learning management system. A learning management system (LMS) is a web-based technology used to plan, implement, and assess a proficiency based learning process. School provides teachers with a way to create and deliver content, monitor student participation, and assess student performance. Curriculum council, administration, and industry experts contributed to this decision.

    • We are committed to supporting you we transition to a proficiency system and we know that ATLAS was not meeting your needs.  We heard you.  This system allows you to not only plan assessments and instruction aligned to requirements and expectations - the what - but will allow you to track student performance toward proficiency, embed your learning scales for feedback and scoring, and manage how to deliver a proficiency based system of learning.  It is ATLAS on steroids and no ATLAS information is lost.  Any assessments, units, or resources you have captured in ATLAS can be downloaded and used to populate Schoology.  We will use Schoology during Curriculum Camp and are working on additional opportunities for continued support during the summer, inservice, and next year.

Note on Afternoon Snack:

The Afternoon Snack in the cafeteria is a federally run program that reimburses us for students only. The purpose is to help ensure that all students can have access to a healthy meal after the school day has ended. It was not intended to feed adults. We wish we could feed everyone, but we can't. The snack is for students only. The program has continually risen in numbers and we need to be able to provide for our students. Thanks for understanding.

Wow, It's Prom season already?!

Celebrations:

SBAC are complete! (except for some make-ups). Huge thanks to the MANY people who helped with coordination and delivery: Janet Sanders, Karen Perry, Bill Slocum, Shannon, Mary B, Mike D, Rachel, Reeves, and Moira. Thank you!

Due to my own technological issues, some of you may have missed the below part of last week's entry:

The PA Baseball team (PA & Stowe students) helped lead a clinic for Stowe Youth Baseball this past weekend at the Stowe Ice Rink (now covered in turf). The players and the new coach did an excellent job teaching skills of the game, sportsmanship, and the joy of baseball. They worked with boys and girls ages 4-11. It was great to see our students providing a service with a smile and maturity.

Happy Birthday: Bill Chilton (4/11)\

Have an awesome vacation!
