Students working through mindset matching.

TA, M3, Proficiency Based Learning & Flexible Pathways

We have a break from the M3 curriculum this week, but we should never break from the idea that developing a student's mindset is of great importance at all times. The research is in. The experts agree. The laws have been passed. The reality lives in our building. Mindset matters! And, our mindset matters, too.

I've received lots of feedback on M3*. Some of it is great and some of it presents problems that we still need to work out. What I would like you to know is that we are experiencing varied levels of success with implementation. This is normal. Currently, some of our students are eating up this work as if it were their favorite dessert, some of our students are approaching it with the curiosity of trying a new dish at a Chinese restaurant, some are reluctantly eating their porridge, and a select few are on a food strike. But, they are ALL LISTENING AND WATCHING. Like the boy in the photo above, his eyes are under his hat, but he is paying attention.

First, our students are watching their peer leaders. This is a big undertaking and we are asking a lot from our students and our youth facilitators, in particular. Our facilitators are working hard and many are uncomfortable in their new role. I need you to do everything in your power to help make them and this initiative successful. The vision of this school and this state moving forward relies on students and teachers understanding and appreciating the power of mindset, metacognition and motivation.

Our students are also watching YOU. If you buy in, if you believe, if you stay positive, most of them will follow.  YES, this takes effort and strength...both are things that you can offer.

Finally, your M3 coaches (your colleagues) are working hard and overtime to help make M3 work. They need all the support, empathy, and compassion that you can give them. Quite frankly, if you can't find it in yourself to support this work and motivate students around this effort, then you are working the wrong school. We need everyone to stay positive and opportunistic with this work. It will be a key to our success during this transition. Stick with it, stay the course, and be your best self. Thank you.

*After our first reporting period comes and passes, we will dedicate time as a group to reflect on M3 and collectively strategize ways to make this work. Until then, stay positive, support those of us who are struggling, and encourage your colleagues to be their best. Thank you.
