October 22 - It's getting Spooky around here.....

Thank you in advance to everyone helping out this weekend with the Haunted High. This is a big undertaking, during a busy time of year, and requires lots of effort and planning. It's going to be awesome! I hope you can make it. Otherwise, enjoy your weekend.

and....Quote of the Week:

“For many students, for many reasons, much of their active working memory may be taken up with things not related to the topic of your class.”   -  “How to Reduce the Cognitive Load on Students During Lessons” by Ian Kelleher in Edutopia, September 16, 2022

'If teachers overload students’ working memory, “learning is hard or impossible.” Students may seem to be understanding during a lesson, but if there’s cognitive overload, very little will make it into long-term memory.'

' “If you want to play music in class,” says Kelleher, “deliberately choose when, knowing that for some students it will add significant cognitive load.” The bottom line: music should reduce stress and improve attention. It’s also helpful to avoid visual clutter in the classroom. “Everything there should have a purpose,” says Kelleher. “Design, don’t decorate. Have less on show at once, and rotate it as the year goes on.”'

There are many great points, strategies, and ideas in this article.

Paley, pictured in the center with The PA Stage Company

Nick Paley , Hollywood screenwriter, visited PA Thursday afternoon & evening. Paley, a graduate of Mount Mansfield Union HS in Jericho, was here on a research mission. He was recently signed by HULU to write the screenplay for a show set in a Vermont High School. He interviewed students and staff to collect the 'real story' about life in Vermont high schools these days. He, 'wants to get it right', so why not talk to the best....PA students.
