April 10: Are you ready for a break?

Driving Habits or Scholarly Habits or both?
Steve shared this simple photo with me last week of a time where he and his students reflected on the Scholarly Habits (SH) in DE class. Steve has been experimenting with SH's in class all year and is on to something good. It's been interesting and enlightening to witness. Steve has figured out how to connect the concept that one's SH's translate to one's driving habits and how the two are not in-separable. When his students write about their habits they reflect articulately about the connection and the importance of focusing on SH's. For instance one student compares 'paying attention' in class to 'being attentive on the road' (Focus).
Another example of how I've seen SH's come to life at PA comes from Mike Dolan's class. In our goals meeting he was able to explain to me that  his analyses of student self reflection on the SH scale, drew a common conclusion. His students wanted to improve their questioning because they could see how it helped their learning. I'm looking forward to BP on Monday where will all hear more about how things are going with our use of SH's.

This Week's Link: Great Grading and Reporting Resource
This link is Tom Guskey's website. At last week's workshop he drew our attention to several tools and articles on the 'resources' section of this website. I'm excited about how the work we did last week at this conference will have a positive impact and provide direction for the SU. We will be sharing the outcomes and decisions from this work soon.

Culture Corner:

With the warm weather coming this next week, please DO NOT send students outside for walks, activities, or class without clear instructions and supervision.

Students must remain on campus, and within sight of the building- usually this means on the front steps, or behind the cafeteria within view of the picnic tables. Students should not walk the nature trail, or be in the parking lots or other areas without specific instructions and supervision.

and

Please be vigilant in maintaining a unified front with students in terms of being in their assigned classes. Send any student not assigned to your class out, and let the office know asap.
