December 17 - We're almost there!

Hi all, thanks again for your amazing work today. I was able to focus and guide us through that situation because I knew you were doing the right things with students. I know that was frustrating, anxiety provoking and stressful. I know there are things for us to work on. But there were some celebrations in there, too. Mainly, the students, staff and parents responded calmly, respectfully and with kindness. Thank you!

We plan to start school on a normal schedule on Monday. School is safe and secure and we feel prepared to start strong on Monday. There will be a strong police presence here today. If you are a PERIOD ONE teacher we would like you to start class with this script. If you would like another adult, such as myself, a counselor, Dan, etc., with you when doing this activity, please let Michele or me know as soon as you can before period one on Monday. If you have any concerns or new information please also let us know. Please call me this weekend if you need help working through this situation (522-6118). If something changes, you will be among the first to know.

We are about to notify families with some similar  information as the above communication to you. Thus, most students will be prepared to engage in a discussion about this on Monday. I'm sorry if this is big disruption to your period one class, but it's what we need to do at this point to help transition ourselves and students back into school.

Below is what I prepared yesterday for today's notes.....it still applies.

As for 2021 - you did some fantastic work this year. Thank you for being awesome people and staying committed to our work with students and each other. Only teachers and school staff truly understand the sacrifices, challenges and exhaustion that you faced and overcame this year. I appreciate all of you and wish you a Happy New Year and I look forward to another positive and successful year with you in 2022. (Three TWO's in one year? - Number people, is there something significant about that?)

*This is the final Weekly Notes for 2021

Updates:

Wednesday Period TBD - Student Racial Equity & Social Justice Group Survey. There will be an announcement at Best Practice on Monday and during Community Meeting on Tuesday to explain the above mentioned short survey.  We were going to do this during period one, but I need to rethink that now - we'll announce on Monday. Most students will need less than 10 minutes, so you could plan for students to continue independent work and/or do individual check in's for those students who will finish the survey quickly. The original timing was discussed at length during our Leadership Team meeting, but we might to adjust it because of Friday's schedule interruption. We hope this will not create a significant inconvenience for anyone.
